Large Format Roadside Signs

A large roadside sign is a different problem from a yard sign in two ways, and neither of them is the printing.

The first is legibility at distance and speed. Letter height sets the distance at which a name can be read, and a driver at speed has about a second, so a large sign should carry a name and almost nothing else. Adding a second line usually means both lines get smaller and neither is read.

The second is the mounting. A four-by-eight sign is a sail, and the posts, the bracing and the ground it is set into are what decide whether it survives the campaign. We quote the framing with the sign rather than leaving it as somebody’s Saturday problem, and we say plainly what wind it is good for.
